An old stone castle
In the days of yore
A tall cold tower
Holding a maiden afore
A mossy moat and armored knights,
Forming a ring of protection.
A windowless tower with a lone stone slit,
Locking up life and liberty
A shaft of summer sunlight
Hit her pale blue eyes
Lighting a thin white face,
Soft cheeks and strong chin
Translucent eyelids slowly slid shut
To visions of freedom and the sun,
Of riding steeds against the wind
To battle and victory
A icy draught slapped her cheeks
Snapping her to reality
To cursed days filled with dust & inaction
And a life doomed to domestic servitude
A living specter she would be,
Going through motions of life,
Counting down to the day she’d pass
Unheard and unsung.
